Sherele Moody’s podcast She Matters gives voice to families impacted by femicide

The Australian journalist and anti-violence campaigner launches new series

Award-winning journalist, femicide researcher and anti-violence campaigner Sherele Moody has launched a new podcast, She Matters, in partnership with Acast.

An extension of her powerful ‘She Matters’ project, the podcast features intimate conversations with the families and loved ones of women and children killed in Australia.

Each episode honours a life lost – through the stories of who these women and girls were, not the lives of the perpetrators. Sherele creates space for families to speak openly about their loved one – the joy they brought, the lives they touched, and the grief they’ve left behind. Many of these stories have never been told publicly. Some were never reported in the media.

“This is not a true crime podcast,” Sherele says. “It’s about lives lived, lives loved, and lives lost.”

With 28 years’ experience in media, Sherele has reported extensively on crime, court and social justice. She is the founder of The RED HEART Campaign and Australian Femicide Watch, and since 2015 has documented more than 2,500 deaths of Australian women and children.

Beyond journalism, Sherele’s work includes:

  • Advocacy for families impacted by homicide
  • Media training on ethical reporting of gendered violence
  • Organising national vigils and rallies for victims
  • Creating the iconic She Matters mural in Melbourne
  • Establishing transitional housing for women leaving violence

The RED HEART Campaign and Australian Femicide Watch are among Australia’s most prominent anti-violence platforms, reaching over 200,000 social media followers and generating millions of views each month.

“Australia is in the midst of a femicide epidemic,” says Sherele. “In fact, it’s been part of our national story for as long as white people have lived here. She Matters tells these stories differently. Friends and families come together to talk about their loved one through the eyes of those left behind. Some stories are familiar. Others have never been heard. All deserve to be.”

Acast will host, distribute and monetise She Matters across all platforms. Weekly episodes are available from 10 October wherever you get your podcasts.
