"Food Addiction"

We are back with Elle in Waterloo, Canada! This week Elle is talking with Amanda Raffoul, a PhD student from the University of Waterloo. Join Elle and Amanda to find out what’s the crack with food addiction!

So, is it an addiction? Are we just overeating? Can you be addicted to life’s necessity? What is the crossover

between eating disorders and “food addiction”? Will this terminology actually help?

Please note: Elle managed to talk about two things without explaining herself (bad hosting skills), so please find a brief explanation of Orthorexia and the Yale Food Addiction Scale below:

Orthorexia (as termed by the National Eating Disorder Association) is an “unhealthy obsession” with healthy eating. It is not currently classified as a clinical diagnosis, but is becoming more common in eating disorder language – for more info please see https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/orthorexia-nervosa

Yale Food Addiction Scale is a 25-question measure to assess “food addiction” in patients – for more information please see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26866783

Thanks and enjoy the show!
